Allianz County Division 1 Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Final played at Austin Stack Park
On Wednesday evening, Abbeydorney NS took on last year’s finalists, Scoil Treasa Noafa, Kilflynn in the Division 1 Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Final in Austin Stack Park. Conditions were excellent for hurling and a large crowd was in attendance to witness this contest between the neighbouring rivals.
Abbeydorney won the toss and elected to play against a slight breeze into the Mitchell’s end. The first quarter was dominated by Abbeydorney NS with Cillian Spillane pointing a free and one from play before Óisín Maunsell latched onto a rebound to rattle the Kilflynn net. Stalwart centre back Dean O’Brien landed a monster over the bar from all of 60 meters. However at this point Scoil Treasa Naofa started to settle and produced some of their best hurling of the contest.
After a period of sustained pressure Eamonn Rohan pierced the Abbeydorney defence and drove low and hard to the net. This was followed by a brace of points for Kilflynn leaving the score at 1.04 to 1.03 in favour of Abbeydorney.
With Adam Maunsell becoming more dominant at mid-field Abbeydorney began to have the upper hand as the end of the first-half approached . Abbeydorney NS were awarded a 20 metre free after some continuous attacking. Spillane, Shefflin like, lifted and struck the sliotar and it shot like a bullet into the Kilflynn net. This was surely a turning point in the match as it left Abbeydorney leading on a scoreline of 2.04 to 1.03 as the whistle blew for half-time.
Kilflynn took over during the opening minutes of the second half and with some wonderful free taking by Darragh O’Donoghue reduced the deficit to one point. Séan Holden then launched a huge puck out to the Abbeydorney full forward line and Shane Donovan collected the ball and slickly found Jack Sheehan who proceeded to rattle the Kilflynn net. Abbeydorney NS were now on a roll. Owen McCarthy and Shane Byrne got on top at the back and cleared their lines with purpose. Robbie Sheehan continued his consistent form and solidly defended his patch.
With seven minutes remaining Keith O’Connor collected a poor clearance and delivered a pin point ball into the square. Two goal hero, Shane Donovan pounced at the chance and scored the first of his three- pointers and now Abbeydorney NS were totally in control. After the introduction of Mikey Clifford the Black and Amber completed their tally with Donovan’s second goal and a point by Óisín Maunsell. Abbeydorney celebrated wildy as the final whistle blew and Kilfynn were very gracious in defeat. Having won the Divison 1, and 2 titles over the past 2 years, this Division 1 success was truly the icing on the cake. Abbeydorney 5.06 to Scoil Treasa Noafa 1.07.
